Even then, the source may or may not be cited, mentioned, or represented prominently.
That makes content optimization for AI-generated search more complicated than simply adding a few statistics, quotations, or citations. Those elements can be useful, but only when they improve the quality, specificity, or credibility of the information itself. What Is Generative Engine Optimization?
The term Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, was introduced by Aggarwal et al. in the study GEO: Generative Engine Optimization. The researchers examined whether modifications to source content could affect how prominently that content appeared within responses produced by generative engines.
Their experiments tested approaches including citations, quotations, statistics, fluency improvements, simplified language, technical terminology, and changes in writing style. Some methods improved source visibility substantially within the study’s experimental environment, with the researchers reporting gains of up to 40% in some cases.
Those findings were important, but they are also easy to overextend. The study primarily examined what happened after relevant sources had already been retrieved or supplied to the generative system. It did not demonstrate that adding citations, statistics, or quotations would cause a webpage to be discovered, retrieved, ranked, or cited across live AI search platforms.
That is important to highlight because visibility happens across several stages. A source may need to be accessible, understood, relevant, retrieved, extracted, synthesized, attributed, and ultimately acted upon by the user. SEO and GEO can influence different parts of that process, but no single tactic controls the entire path.

What Does the GEO GPT Analyze?
The GEO GPT reviews content based on the qualities that make information easier to understand, verify, distinguish, and potentially use within search and generated answers. Rather than treating citations, statistics, quotations, or other GEO tactics as items to add automatically, the tool evaluates whether the content itself provides enough value and evidence.
The analysis focuses on six areas: clarity, specificity, verifiability, distinctiveness, structure and extractability, and entity clarity. Together, these provide a broader way to evaluate whether a page contains information worth retrieving and using.
Clarity
Clear content makes its main ideas easy to understand. GEO looks at how well the page communicates its topic, claims, explanations, and conclusions, while also identifying confusing terminology, vague wording, weak organization, or places where the relationship between a claim and its supporting evidence is unclear.
Clarity matters because information that is difficult to interpret is less useful regardless of whether the reader is a person, a search engine, or a retrieval system. Improving clarity does not mean oversimplifying the content. It means making the meaning of the content easier to identify.
Specificity
General statements often provide limited value. More useful content usually includes concrete details such as names, dates, examples, locations, quantities, attributes, product information, service details, or other facts that help explain exactly what is being discussed.
GEO looks for places where the content could be more precise without adding unnecessary detail simply for the sake of appearing comprehensive. The goal is not to add numbers everywhere. It is to make important claims more informative and useful.
Verifiability
Important claims should be supported by evidence that readers can evaluate or confirm. GEO reviews the use of citations, statistics, quotations, credentials, methodology, attribution, and other forms of supporting evidence.
The tool also identifies claims that may need stronger verification. It does not invent citations, studies, statistics, experts, quotations, or sources. When stronger evidence is needed, the recommendation is to identify the type of source or documentation that should be researched and verified before publication.
Distinctiveness
A large amount of online content repeats information already available elsewhere. Content becomes more valuable when it contributes something beyond a summary of what dozens of other pages already say.
That may include original research, first-hand experience, proprietary data, case studies, documented outcomes, unique examples, expert observations, or meaningful analysis. GEO looks for these elements and identifies where the content could contribute something more distinctive.
Structure and Extractability
Useful information should be easy to locate and understand. GEO evaluates how headings, definitions, direct answers, comparisons, tables, summaries, and question-and-answer sections help organize the content.
This does not mean every article should become a list or that content should be written awkwardly for machines. The goal is to organize information naturally so that readers can quickly understand the important points and individual passages can still make sense when retrieved or summarized.
Entity Clarity
Content also helps establish who or what an entity is. Depending on the page, that may include a business, person, organization, product, service, location, or another identifiable subject.
For a business, useful entity information may include its name, services, locations, service areas, history, credentials, audience, and differentiators. GEO looks for missing, inconsistent, or ambiguous information and identifies claims that may benefit from stronger corroboration elsewhere.
Information Utility: A Better Way to Evaluate GEO Content
The tactics tested in the original GEO study become more useful when viewed through a broader concept: information utility. Instead of asking whether a page contains enough citations, statistics, or quotations, the better question is whether those elements make the information more useful.

Useful information tends to be clear, specific, verifiable, and distinctive. A citation can improve verifiability. A statistic can make a claim more specific. A quotation can provide expert evidence or a perspective that adds something different. Improved fluency can make an explanation easier to understand.
The tactic itself is not the objective. What matters is the information that tactic contributes and whether it improves the usefulness of the page.
How to Use the GEO GPT
Using the GEO GPT is straightforward. You can paste an article, landing page, service page, product page, business description, or another piece of content into the tool. Additional context such as the target audience, intended query, business information, competitors, or the purpose of the page can also help improve the analysis.

The GPT then evaluates the content across the six areas outlined above and provides an Information Utility Scorecard. These scores are editorial assessments rather than platform-specific AI visibility scores. Their purpose is to show where the content is already strong and where meaningful gaps may exist.

From there, GEO identifies the highest-priority issues instead of creating an endless checklist of possible edits. Depending on the content, that may include unsupported claims, outdated information, vague explanations, missing evidence, repetitive sections, unclear terminology, weak entity information, or a lack of distinctive insight.

The final recommendations are tied directly to the submitted content. GEO identifies where the issue occurs, explains what should change and why, and provides implementation guidance or example revisions where useful.

Citations, Statistics, and Quotations Still Matter
The GEO study found that citations, quotations, statistics, and other content modifications could change how sources were represented within generated answers. That does not mean every page should simply add more of them.
A citation is valuable when it helps verify an important claim. A statistic is useful when it adds meaningful context or specificity. A quotation can strengthen a page when it contributes expertise, first-hand evidence, or a perspective that would otherwise be missing.
Adding these elements without a clear purpose can create the appearance of authority without actually making the content more useful. The better question is not how many citations or statistics a page contains, but whether the evidence makes the information easier to trust, understand, or use.
GEO Does Not Guarantee AI Visibility
No content optimization tool can guarantee that a webpage will be retrieved, cited, mentioned, or recommended by an AI system. Different platforms may use different indexes, retrieval systems, ranking methods, source-selection processes, models, and interfaces, and those systems continue to change.
A page can contain excellent information and still fail to appear for a particular query. A source can be retrieved without being cited, contribute information without receiving visible attribution, or influence a user without generating an immediate click.
For that reason, GEO should not be treated as a collection of guaranteed AI ranking factors. The practical goal is to improve the quality and usefulness of the information we publish so that, when it is discovered and evaluated, it provides something worth using.
How GEO Works With SEO
GEO and SEO address different but overlapping parts of search visibility. Technical SEO helps ensure that pages can be accessed, crawled, indexed, and understood. Internal linking helps establish relationships between pages, while search-focused content helps connect information with the questions and needs of users.
Those foundations remain important when AI systems rely on search indexes or other retrieval systems to locate information. Once content becomes a candidate source, additional questions become more important. Is the relevant information easy to identify? Are important claims specific and supported? Does the source contribute something distinctive? Are the people, businesses, products, services, and relationships described clearly?
That is where information utility becomes increasingly important. SEO helps create the opportunity to be found and retrieved, while GEO-related content practices can improve the usefulness of the information once a source is being evaluated or used.
Better Content for Search and AI
Optimizing for AI-generated search does not require abandoning the principles that make content valuable to people. In many cases, the same improvements benefit both.
Clear explanations help readers understand the subject. Specific facts provide useful detail. Reliable evidence builds trust. Original research and experience add something new. Strong organization makes information easier to navigate, while clear entity information reduces ambiguity about who or what is being discussed.
None of those qualities guarantees visibility in a generated answer. They do, however, create stronger content regardless of whether someone encounters it through a traditional search result, an AI-generated answer, a citation, a recommendation, or the webpage itself.
