ChatGPT and other LLMs can make content optimization much easier for you. I have found them to be great tools for optimizing metadata, headers, keyword placement, and more.
In this article, I’m going to show you how I use ChatGPT for content optimization. For a deeper understanding of how AI technologies like ChatGPT are reshaping SEO, check out our comprehensive guide on AI in SEO.
What are SEO Content Optimization Best Practices?
SEO content optimization best practices are tactics that have been found to be generally effective. They are not rules and do not work in every situation. Use best practices as a starting point for your content. Continue to test variations until you find what works best for your site.
Always keep in mind that SEO optimization is an ongoing process of improvement and adjusting to Google’s changing algorithms. It’s not a one and done process.
Keyword Research
Optimizing content often starts with keywords. You might not have an identified target keyword, the chosen keyword may not be effective, or the page isn’t quite optimized for it. If there’s no keyword or it isn’t a good fit, you need to identify a target keyword that’s relevant and valuable. Including this keyword in your content improves your chances of appearing in search results.
Tools you can use for keyword research:
- Google Search Console
- Google Keyword Planner
- Semrush
- Ahrefs
URLs
Optimizing URLs is another important aspect of SEO when optimizing a page. URLs should be concise, descriptive, and include the primary keyword. Avoid using generic terms or long strings of numbers and symbols. Also, use hyphens to separate words in the URL.
For example, “yoursitename.com/best-chocolate-chip-cookies” is better than “yoursitename.com/?p=1234.” Including the primary keyword in the URL can make it easier for search engines to understand the page’s content. Additionally, URLs that are easy to read and understand are more likely to be clicked on by users, increasing the page’s click-through rate.
Title Tags
Title tags signal to search engines what your page is about and quite often show up as the blue clickable link in search engine result pages. Place the keyword closer to the beginning of the title for better results. As mentioned above, test keyword placement on your site.
For example, “Best Chocolate Chip Cookies | YourSiteName.” I suggest that when you use separators, use colons (:) and pipes (|) instead of a dash (-), as they takes up less pixel space, allowing more characters in search results. Don’t forget to keep the title under 60 characters.
Meta Descriptions
Meta descriptions summarize your page’s content. Use your selected keyword, ideally at the start of the description, and add a call-to-action to entice searchers. Keep the length under 160 characters. Ensure each page has a unique meta description.
Headers and Subheaders
Headers play a significant role in optimization. Your page should have only one H1, including your target keyword, preferably at the beginning of the sentence. For additional headings (H2s), use related or semantically connected terms to the primary keyword.
Text and Beyond
For the actual content, I suggest you examine other sites ranking for your target keyword. Determine their content length and keyword usage frequency. To check content length, consider using the SEO Pro Extension. To find keyword usage on the page, use Ctrl+F (or Command+F on Apple). Or use the Keywords Everywhere extension. Aim for content that addresses the content better than the ranking content while providing better value to the readers.
ChatGPT and Content Optimization
ChatGPT is a very helpful tool for optimizing web pages, especially for large sites that can be difficult to manage. With e-commerce sites that have multiple similar products, it can be a real challenge to create unique content that stands out. I have found that ChatGPT makes this process a lot easier.
So I’m ging to show you below how I use ChatGPT to optimize important elements like title tags, meta descriptions, headers and subheaders, and the text itself. Assuming you already have a target keyword in mind, we’ll get started. And if not, no worries – ChatGPT can help you select the perfect keyword for your page.
Optimizing URLs, Title Tags, and Meta Descriptions with ChatGPT
For this post, I am going to optimize the Paws Out dog walking page. After some research, I’ve settled on the primary keyword “Natick dog walking.” To save time, I like to tackle multiple optimizations for each prompt. For this first part, we wll optimize the URL, title tag, and meta description. Let’s jump into ChatGPT.

ChatGPT quickly produced the following:

It applied the keyword “Natick dog walking” to the URL, page title, and meta description perfectly according to the prompt. It even added a call to action in the meta description following SEO best practices!
Headers and Text Optimization
After reviewing the Paws Out page with the SEO Pro Extension, I saw that the page had no headers at all. This is not good for SEO or the reader. Headers provide important information to search engines regarding what the page is about. For the reader, headings help them engage with the content, navigate the page, and find the information they need quickly and easily.
I wanted to optimize the existing content and create a heading structure for this page using ChatGPT. To optimize for the keyword “Natick dog walking,” I’ll use it as the focus of our H1. Additionally, we’ll request semantically related keywords for the other headings.

The output from ChatGPT:

ChatGPT not only optimized the H1 for the primary keyword but also added a request: “Let Us Walk Your Dog!” It also identified H2s and H3s with semantically-related topics to provide more structure to the page.
